The Gold Coast and Tweed region is characterized by a high child and youth population and a high retirement and older adult population in comparison to the rest of Queensland and other parts of Australia. Contrary to popular belief, the Gold Coast and Tweed region is not a well off area and has substantial social and economic disadvantage. Many people living here are on low incomes or are dependant on social security payments in the form of unemployment benefits, sickness benefits, single parent pensions, or the old age pension. You can find more back ground information here.

The purpose of the institute is to advance the field of mental health in the Gold Coast by the application of knowledge about mental health to mental health education, mental health training, mental health research and mental health advocacy.  The Gold Coast Institute of Mental Health motto is “Advancing with Knowledge”.

The aim of the Institute is to;

  • Provide knowledge about mental health to the public

  • Provide mental health skills to interested citizens including Patients, Consumers, Carers, Volunteers

  • Educate and train professionals in mental health practices

  • Advance knowledge/research in the field

  • Advocate for improved mental health and mental health services for the Gold Coast and Tweed communities.

Organisation

The Gold Coast Institute of Mental Health is a non government, not for profit organisation. It is governed by a community board  representing people and organisations that want to advance the mental health of the Gold Coast and Tweed community.

The membership of the board links the Gold Coast Institute of Mental Health to local universities and educational institutions, to public and private mental health services, to patient/consumer/carer groups, to non government service organizations, to Local/State/Commonwealth governments, and professional service providers (Division of General Practitioners, College of Psychiatrists, and professional organizations of Psychologists, Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals).  The community commitee meets regularly.

Board members, Prof Philip Morris and Dr Peter Vidgen, with Catherine Payze from the University of South Africa's Department of Psychology, where she is currently involved in teaching the post-graduate subjects of Psychopathology and Ecosystemic psychology at Honours level.
